Foundation's general assembly finds success in Vienna

Fieldbus Foundation's 2005 General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, attracted visitors interested in the latest developments in FOUNDATION fieldbus technology.

"Plant-wide Integration: HSE+H1," was the theme for the Foundation's 2005 General Assembly, which took place Feb. 23-24 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Vienna, Austria. The location, a mixture of historic and new structures blending to form a cohesive and vibrant metropolitan atmosphere, provided a platform for European gateway states and principals to share a core set of knowledge through high-quality speakers from many regions of the globe.

The event included an end user-oriented program featuring automation industry leaders, FOUNDATION fieldbus case studies, technical training workshops and tabletop product demonstrations. The General Assembly agenda included keynote addresses by Peter Eigenraam, program leader for instrumentation innovation, Shell Global Solutions, and Dr. Gunther Kegel, chief executive officer, Pepperl+Fuchs Mannheim. for operating expenses (OPEX) and capital expenses (CAPEX) savings?" focused on Shell's operating cost reductions and improvements in operating efficiencies enabled by Fieldbus technology. Dr. Kegel spoke on the value of innovative technologies such as FOUNDATION fieldbus from a supplier's viewpoint.

Workshops for process control vendors, end users, and contractors focused on plant-wide integration with FOUNDATION fieldbus. Attendees received valuable information on fieldbus installations and advancements. In a tabletop exhibit, member companies displayed their latest FOUNDATION fieldbus devices and host systems.

The General Assembly kicked off on Wednesday, Feb. 23, with a series of end-user case studies. Presenters included: Leen van der Reiden, Shin-Etsu ("FOUNDATION fieldbus: The New Standard of Shin-Etsu PVC BV"); Sven Seinsch, Infraserv ("Maintenance Requirements NE107"); and Ian Verhappen, ICE-Pros, Inc. ("FF Economics and Modeling Tool"). Verhappen, who currently serves as chairman of the Fieldbus Foundation End User Advisory Council (EUAC), also presented "What is the EUAC?" Stephen Mitschke, Fieldbus Foundation product manager, provided an update on worldwide fieldbus activities. A cocktail welcome reception and the keynotes followed.

Thursday's agenda began with fieldbus technology workshops. The afternoon program included end-user presentations by John Mosher, Honeywell ("FF and NeSSI"); Luay Al-Awami, Saudi Aramco ("Middle East Paper"); Chris Baltus, DSM ("The Next Step: Using Fieldbus for Safety

As in previous years, the General Assembly's technical program was well attended.

Applications"); and Herman Storey, Shell Global Solutions ("An End User View"). An open panel discussion with leading fieldbus experts and comments by Fieldbus Foundation President and CEO Richard Timoney concluded the event.

The 2005 General Assembly follows successful Fieldbus Foundation events in the Americas, Asia/Pacific, and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa—including CIS). These end user and developer-based gatherings demonstrate the continued growth of FOUNDATION fieldbus in the control and instrumentation market and acknowledge worldwide industry support for the technology.

OPC Foundation joins industry cooperation project

OPC Foundation (OPCF) has joined the international cooperative team that already includes three leading fieldbus organizations—Fieldbus Foundation (FF), HART Communication Foundation (HCF), and Profibus Nutzerorganisation e.V. (PNO)—to extend the reach of electronic device descriptions (EDDs) into OPCF's Unified Architecture.

The cooperative joint working group of FF, HCF, and PNO formed in 2003 to extend the capabilities of Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL). An underlying technology in millions of installed field instruments, EDDL is a text-based language for describing the digital communication characteristics of intelligent control devices. Device suppliers use EDDs to provide information on parameters and other data in a device.

The group developed extensions enabling robust organization and graphical visualization of device data, and providing support for persistent data storage, while maintaining operating system (OS) and platform independence. The extensions will be integrated within the respective control network technologies and added to the IEC 61804-2 standard upon completion.

Following its successful Phase 1 collaboration, the joint working group began efforts to further extend the open and interoperable EDD standard for delivery of extensive device, control configuration, and diagnostic data to the OPCF Unified Architecture.

According to ARC Advisory Group analyst Larry O'Brien, the automation community has long speculated on the role that OPC would play in the context of FOUNDATION fieldbus. "The inclusion of EDD in the OPC framework is a smart move that will enhance interoperability significantly at the system and enterprise level in a truly open fashion that is independent of any operating system architecture," said O'Brien. "EDD also provides OPC with a technology that is an accepted part of the IEC fieldbus standard and is already embedded in millions of FOUNDATION fieldbus, HART, and Profibus devices and systems that are installed in the field and running today."

Said Richard Timoney, Fieldbus Foundation president and CEO, "Phase 2 of this agreement will continue to enhance the delivery of critical data from the device, and provide a standard and consistent structure for data transport within the OPCF Unified Architecture. The overall effect will be a vastly simplified approach for users to access and distribute performance measurements and process data such as alarms. Users will also take advantage of increased system interoperability and cost-effective control system integration."

According to Tom Burke, OPCF president, users will benefit most from the interoperability of the OPCF Unified Architecture. "This is the beauty of working with standards like OPC and EDDL. Users can take advantage of open systems, but be assured of connectivity and interoperability among these systems," said Burke. "Without this standards-based approach, the industry would have to create a community of software developers to support all the different systems, each with a unique set of software drivers and the associated revision management issues that are part and parcel of operating system changes."

NeSSI adopts FOUNDATION Fieldbus as standard

New Sampling Sensor Initiative (NeSSI) has adopted Fieldbus Foundation's open, non-proprietary technology, FOUNDATION fieldbus, as its communications standard. FOUNDATION fieldbus for Intrinsically Safe (IS) operation has been incorporated into the NeSSI Generation II Draft Specification.

After more than two years of investigation and experimentation, members of The Center for Process Analytical Chemistry (CPAC) and the NeSSI committee decided that FOUNDATION fieldbus is the right network communication architecture to achieve NeSSI project goals, which include the need for intrinsically safe operation. Widespread acceptance of FOUNDATION fieldbus within the process industries and a broad vendor base also influenced the choice.

The NeSSI project seeks to simplify and standardize sample system design. Based on semiconductor (SEMI) standards and ISA SP76 work, the NeSSI standard promotes the concept of field-mounted analytical systems; integration of sample systems with physical/chemical sensors ("plug and play"); development of small, smart, integrated sampling, sensor, and analyzer transmitters; and the validation of representative sample and analysis. In addition, NeSSI will lay the groundwork for new process analytical systems employing open connectivity architecture, industry-standard protocols, and web-enabled technology.

According to CPAC director Mel Koch, the incorporation of FOUNDATION fieldbus builds on the successful efforts in the development of fluidic components and flow substrate hardware that make up the NeSSI platform. Koch said, "This initiative will help the automation industry adapt the emerging class of "lab on a chip" sensors to a miniature/modular "smart" manifold, which could fundamentally change the way industry does process development and optimization, as well as process analysis."

He added that, "Standard sample conditioning and data logging will improve the ability to use multi-variant data analysis technology."

The CPAC and NeSSI group, in collaboration with the Fieldbus Foundation, will work to ensure successful application of the technology to sample system components, miniature sensors, actuators, and analytical instruments under development for the NeSSI platform.

According to Dave Glanzer, FF Director of Technology Development, including FOUNDATION fieldbus in the NeSSI standard is an important step in the industry's adoption of open automation system standards. "We welcome our association with CPAC, which will advance sampling sensor technology through the implementation of a fieldbus communication architecture," said Glanzer. "NeSSI is a leading-edge initiative that will make it possible for device manufacturers to modularize and miniaturize the next generation of smart process analyzer sample system components and gain efficiencies in operation through the use of the advanced diagnostics and communication capabilities provided by FOUNDATION fieldbus."

Foundation establishes European advisory council

Fieldbus Foundation has established a European Executive Advisory Council (EEAC). The EEAC is dedicated to providing leadership for marketing activities that support the adoption of FOUNDATION fieldbus-based products and systems by European automation equipment end users. Comprised of senior executives from European-based companies, the new council will provide guidance, commitment, and support to regional marketing strategies of the foundation tailored to the composition and culture of European-served markets.

Dr. Gunther Kegel, president of Pepperl+Fuchs and acting chairman of the EEAC commented, "The marketing of FOUNDATION technology has to reflect the cultural and economic realities of different areas of the world. Marketing strategies must be set up and financed which regionalize the approach of the Fieldbus Foundation across the globe."

Initial participation in the EEAC is a veritable "Who's Who" of European automation industry executives. In addition to Dr. Kegel, current members include Juergen Fuchs, ABB; Jim Nyquist, Emerson Process Management, Europe; Dr. Raimund Sommer, Endress+Hauser; Christopher Dartnell, Honeywell; Alain Ginguene, Invensys; Graeme Philp, MTL; Mick Grange, Rockwell Automation; Wolfgang Trier, Softing; and Harry Hauptmeijer, Yokogawa.

"We are very pleased and excited to have such a committed group of executives standing behind the promotion of FOUNDATION Fieldbus across Europe," said FF president and CEO Richard Timoney. "The technology has reached a level of adoption and maturity that requires focused initiatives in order to reach late adopters—and regionalization is a logical next step. This council will provide advice and direction to local marketing committees in each country on activities such as seminars, trade shows, training, advertising, and general promotion of the technology. It will also help ensure sufficient human resources and funding to execute these initiatives."

Timoney added that the EEAC will work closely with the Fieldbus Foundation's executive staff to integrate European marketing activities with the organization's strategic vision and direction. Two new regional training centers open

Fieldbus Foundation has added two regional FOUNDATION fieldbus training sites, a response to the rapid adoption of the technology throughout major global industrial markets. The new certified fieldbus training facilities include Yanshan Simulation Training Center (operated by Sinopec Corp.) in Beijing, China, and Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana, USA.

Certified fieldbus training is also offered at Waseda University, Waseda, Japan; Shipping & Transport College (STC), Brielle, The Netherlands; Lee College Fieldbus Center, Baytown, TX, USA; and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

According to FF president and CEO Richard Timoney, the need to reduce operating expenses (OPEX) and capital expenses (CAPEX), and improve plant asset management, is driving end user demand for fieldbus training.

"Industrial manufacturers recognize that FOUNDATION fieldbus is a plant automation solution that helps improve their business performance," said Timoney. "Due to growing adoption of this technology, leading educational institutions around the world are seeking to offer certified fieldbus instruction. The addition of two more regional training sites shows how the Fieldbus Foundation and its members are partnering with the academic and industrial communities to enable the implementation of fieldbus-based controls."

Factory acceptance test completed on BP plant demo

The Fieldbus Center at Lee College (Baytown, Texas) has successfully completed the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for the Flexible Function Block (FFB) demonstration system at BP's Lima, OH, BDO production plant. All devices and subsystems met design parameters, and tests confirmed that the system design met or exceeded defined performance targets.

The Center facilitated the FAT process by providing valuable support throughout the BP engineering phase. It dedicated many hours of design leadership to advance the FFB/HSE implementation at the Lima site.

"We appreciate the assistance provided by the Lee College Fieldbus Center for our technology demonstration at BP," said David A. Glanzer, FF director of technology development. "The Center's expertise was an invaluable help in completing the FAT and verifying the performance of the fieldbus system."

The BP manufacturing project brings together volunteer member company personnel dedicated to promoting and developing FOUNDATION fieldbus. The demo features FOUNDATION technology in a comprehensive functional production environment and demonstrates the entire integrated H1+HSE architecture. This comprehensive system and supplier-designed implementation is an in-depth effort in which the advanced capabilities of FOUNDATION fieldbus for critical process control exemplify the best technology solution available.

STC Brielle awards first James O. Gray scholarship

Martin Remis, 22, of Spijkenisse, The Netherlands is the first recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the James O. Gray-Fieldbus Foundation scholarship fund. Remis is a student at Shipping & Transport College (STC), Brielle, The Netherlands, a leading European educational institution for process manufacturing. He will graduate this year with a degree in Operational Technologies and is the institution's leading student in the field of measurement and control.

The James O. Gray-Fieldbus Foundation Scholarship Fund honors the memory of James (Jim) O. Gray, who passed away in 2002. Gray was a long time Fieldbus Foundation supporter and friend and colleague to many in the automation industry. The goal of the program is to create a perpetual $250,000 endowment fund for educational scholarships in the form of annual awards of up to $1,000. Scholarships are given to students around the world interested in industrial automation.

Bareld Bruining, fieldbus coordinator for STC, said, "We are pleased to provide our first award under the James O. Gray scholarship program to Martin Remis. Martin is a very deserving individual, and he exemplifies the dedication, hard work, and technical knowledge we encourage in all of our students."

Emerson enhances PlantWeb architecture

Emerson Process Management has released DeltaV™ version 7.4. The new edition offers expanded integration of FOUNDATION fieldbus devices and faster trending. These enhancements to the PlantWeb® digital plant architecture let customers get projects online faster, with more choices for fieldbus implementation, and make day-to-day operations simpler. Emerson continues to invest in DeltaV technology to expand its innovation leadership in the digital plant automation marketplace.

Version 7.4 of the DeltaV software increases the number of Virtual Communications Relationships among FOUNDATION fieldbus devices to 50. It significantly expands communications power for customers, who gain the ability to address more complicated devices and expand the possibilities for more intricate control relationships.

Enhancements also permit faster access to FOUNDATION fieldbus parameters, enabling AMS™ Device Manager diagnostic screens to populate data more quickly. This reduces time required for customers to commission or troubleshoot fieldbus devices. DeltaV Continuous Historian maintains the wealth of information available in the intelligent field devices. The status of a parameter that has been configured for history collection is automatically stored along with its value, allowing customers to make better decisions in controlling their process.

'Tolling the bell' for intrinsic safety

The problems that systems designers have with I.S. (intrinsically safe) fieldbus are well known and extensively documented; I.S. designs are technically complex, more expensive to implement, prone to confusion, and difficult for everyone to understand. Fieldbus exacerbates those issues. FISCO (Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept) is a complex technical solution to a basic conflict: I.S. designs require tight power limiting, and fieldbus encourages many devices per segment.

Fieldbus users and system designers should be aware that simply repeating systems previously developed for analog instrumentation is close to missing the point. The key driver for I.S. was the ability to perform "live" maintenance, but fieldbus allows device interrogation and adjustment from the (safe area) comfort of an engineering or maintenance workstation. Without the benefit of "live" maintenance, the associated problems of I.S. design are simply unacceptable, particularly compared to the capability of non-incendive systems.

Lee College offers 'Fieldbus for sales professionals' course

Fieldbus Center at Lee College now offers "Fieldbus for Sales Professionals," a one-day course for inside, outside, or service sales personnel who need a general overview of fieldbus. The foundation-certified training course requires no previous digital control system experience.

Topics covered include:

MTL FISCO power supplies chosen for Shell project

MTL's FISCO (Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept) power supplies have been chosen for the Bonny Island Terminal Project, a new development of 24 oil storage tanks for Shell Petroleum Development Corp. in Nigeria. The control system, provided by the Korean subsidiary of Yokogawa Electric, includes a 6,000-device FOUNDATION fieldbus network; 1,600 of the devices are located in hazardous areas.

Intrinsic safety was selected as the preferred protection method for the hazardous sector. Fieldbus power is provided by MTL's 9122-IS FISCO power supplies. These are used in conjunction with intrinsically safe Megablock wiring hubs and FBT1-IS terminators, to create fieldbus segments that may be "live-worked" without gas clearance. FISCO delivers more current to the fieldbus than earlier I.S. implementations, allowing as much as 265 mA—sufficient to power at least 12 fieldbus devices per hazardous area trunk. Eliminating cable parameter calculations reduces engineering effort while retaining the conventional benefits of I.S. as the safest protection technique.

In addition, the main engineering contractor, Hyundai Heavy Industries, specified surge protection for all the fieldbus segments to protect against lightning-induced surge damage. FP32 and TP32 surge protectors were used. They are designed to be transparent to fieldbus communications while providing protection for the field instruments, power supplies, and control system.

Yamatake releases control valve system

Valstaff advanced control valve maintenance support system from Yamatake Corp. lets users visualize control valve health and provides maintenance advisory information. Based on more than 70 yr of control valve manufacturing and field maintenance service experience, the system comes with either HART communication or FOUNDATION fieldbus with the AVP300 Series smart valve positioner.

Features include a real-time condition monitoring and advisory alarm function to help reduce breakdown maintenance and total CV overhaul costs. CV health alarms generate maintenance requests to minimize unexpected control valve failures. Control valve and safety-related information can be monitored in real-time with the CV Stick Slip diagnostic function, which statistically monitors CV hysterics.

System also provides remote calibration of control valves through an auto set-up function in the AVP300 Series smart valve positioner. Yamatake's AVP 300 Series smart valve positioner has operated in the field for over a decade. More than 100,000 devices are installed (many in conventional 4-20 mA environments). Conventional 4-20 mA AVP 300s may be upgraded to HART or FOUNDATION fieldbus communication environments.
