Organised by the Norwegian industry association for electrotechnology and automation (IFEA), a successful two day fieldbus conference was held at the Park Hotel, Sandefjord, Norway from 21st-22nd March 2007.
An extensive seminar program included fifteen speakers from suppliers of fieldbus systems or technology and end users. With a conference focus of "Fieldbus in Industry", the presentations considered several aspects of general fieldbus applications experiences as well as more specific topics including fieldbus and safety systems, remote I/O, and wireless solutions. Roger Highton, representing Fieldbus Foundation - EMEA Operations, delivered a presentation "Foundation Fieldbus Technology Expanding Across The Globe" that looked at how several global companies have applied Foundation technology based not only on the CAPEX savings achievable but also on OPEX savings.
The conference was attended by approximately 40 end users, contractors and suppliers who also enjoyed the opportunity to visit Pronova Biocare - a biotechnology plant in Sandefjord.
Pronova Biocare has used Foundation technology for several years, initially implementing just a modest system, followed later by two large scale installation projects. Engineers at the plant find the additional diagnostics information available from the fieldbus system useful, particularly when the causes of process problems can be demonstrated to operators. A problem can often be assumed to be an instrumentation problem when it is actually a process problem which would require a different action.
A dinner held on the first night provided a relaxed forum for discussions and the sharing of applications experiences.
